Outcome of infants with necrotising enterocolitis at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital, South Africa

Background. Necrotising enterocolitis (NEC) is an inflammatory disease almost exclusively affecting preterm infants. Previous research has presented a higher mortality rate in infants requiring surgical treatment compared with receiving medical treatment. However, the knowledge of and morbidity low- middle-income countries still limited.Objectives. To review NEC admitted to neonatal unit at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (CMJAH),determine potential difference between medically surgically treated infants, identify characteristics factors associated among these infants.Methods. This retrospective study described born 1 January 2016 31 December 2018 who were admittedto unit. The survival using univariate multivariate analyses.Results. During period, 5 061 unit, which 218 diagnosed NEC.The period prevalence was 4.3% all 11.0% very-low-birthweight (VLBW) Mortalitywas significantly (p=0.025, odds ratio 1.888(95% confidence interval 1.082 - 3.296)). Late-onset sepsis more common VLBW (71.3%)compared without (27.1%). Among late-onset sepsis, Gram-negative bacteria, multidrug-resistantbacteria fungal group NEC.Conclusions. Infants CMJAH have increased risk dying those medicaltreatment, likely due severity disease. Furthermore, this emphasised burden may contribute better South Africa.
